Southern Germany wins DCB Youth County Championships
On a sunny day in Frankfurt the DCB’s youth county championship final took place between a team from Southern Germany and a team from NRW. Winning the toss, South Germany put NRW in to bat and soon had them in all kinds of trouble. Both openers were out in the first over to Tahsildar Ahmadzai (Tegernsee CC), including German Under 18 skipper Tushar Marwaha, and more followed quickly.
Tahsildar took four quick wickets as the NRW team was reduced to just 12 for 6 before Arif Jamal (Ruhr Valley) and Oliver Filby (Deutsche Welle CC) came in. Oliver took the anchor role scoring slowly and holding his end up as Arif attacked the bowling hitting 4 sixes in a quick fire 38 before being stumped as he came down the track to a leg break from Paul.
The NRW innings had recovered somewhat, and closed at 114 all out off only 19 of the allotted 30 overs. This was clearly a disappointing target but at least gave the NRW bowlers a shout.
The southern German team played a very sensible innings and despite losing wickets along the way they were always in control of things. 12 year old Paul opened and carried his bat in a very stylish innings that left him not out on 26 at the end. The big hitting was done by man of the match Tahsildar (27 not out) as the Southern German team reached their target with wickets and overs to spare.
It was a fantastic day of youth cricket, played in a fantastic spirit by both sides.
The DCB would like to thank the hosts SC Riedberg, particularly Sekandhar Khan who has done so much to establish youth cricket in the Hessen region this year. Big thanks must also go to Robert Plant for bringing the boys from Munich as well as Andrew Filby for organising the NRW team together with George Lawson, Andrew Schou and Doc Wilkinson.
Next year we hope to expand this championship to involve more teams and more matches.
